SIGN/e (Symbol-based Interface for Graphic Notation Edition) is a free Max for Live plug-in for creating and performing animated graphic scores in Ableton Live. It combines the precision of traditional composition with the spontaneity and dynamism of improvisational and generative music practices.
Composers place symbols and text on a scrolling score. Each object's parameters (position, size, colour and pattern) may then be manipulated via Live's automation curves and modulation sources as well as live input from hardware or software controllers. Symbols can send MIDI notes as the playhead reaches them, allowing the score to trigger sound generation. SIGN/e is designed to facilitate mixed performances that combine automated sound generation with live electronic and/or acoustic instrumentation.
SIGN/e was developed by the Laboratoire formes•ondes at the Université de Montréal as part of the research-creation project Performative Notation, and version 1.0 was released in May 2026.
Role
Under the direction of Nicolas Bernier, I programmed SIGN/e, building on my earlier work on Graphic Score Reader. Each symbol is its own device in Live, so its parameters can be automated like those of any instrument or effect. The score is drawn in Jitter using GPU instancing and custom GLSL shaders so that many animated symbols can be shown at once.
